Abstract:

Alocasia has been revised for Malesia recently by Hay 0998, 1999) and Hay & Wise (1991). A recent expedition by staff of the Kebun Raya Bogor team to Sulawesi has resulted in the discovery of a new species belonging to the Alocasia puber group (sensu Hay, 1998). Besides Alocasia puber (Hassk.) Schott found from the Malay Peninsula to Java, this group included two endemic Bornean species, A. sarawakensis M. Hotta and the very distinctive A. robusta M. Hotta, and Philippine A. maquilingensis Merr. Until now, this species group was not known to be represented  in Sulawesi.
